The Kids Are Alright: 2020 Through The Eyes Of Hawaii’s Teenagers

In August 2020 I gave audio recorders to nine teenagers across the island of Oahu. Their daily audio diaries documented struggles that every former teenager can relate to, but also revealed surprising insights into why Hawaii’s next generation might be adapting to the pandemic better than adults.

The audio from these teenagers was used for a three-part series on how the events of 2020 are affecting the politics, mental health and long-term goals of Hawaii's next generation. In 2021 I wrote a follow-up article and hosted a live event with the participants.

Troubled Water

The News21 investigative project has won a number of awards, including a student Edward R. Murrow award, a final recognition in the yearly Investigative Reporters and Editors Awards, a 2nd place title in Best of the West and a first place in environmental reporting from the Arizona Press Club.

I directed the "Troubled Water" documentary, which involved embedding with Native American tribes in Montana and New Jersey and overseeing 15 reporters across 8 states. The documentary aired on PBS Newshour, won a Rocky Mountain Emmy and was honored with a Webby alongside documentaries produced by CNN, The Guardian and National Geographic.

Offshore on Hawaii Public Radio

After releasing "Offshore: Far From Home" to an online audience, Civil Beat partnered with Hawaii Public Radio to air the season over three weeks in the summer of 2020.

In addition to re-mixing the podcasts for radio, I put together a series of interviews with members of the Hawaiian diaspora to further connect with the Hawaiian community in the islands and abroad.

Special Coverage - The Life and Legacy of John McCain

In the final months of Sen. John McCain's life, I combed through archives, pulled audio and wrote copy on some of the most pivotal moments of his career - from his time in Vietnam to the Keating five scandal and presidential bids. These clips were used in KJZZ's live special and throughout the following week as KJZZ examined his life and legacy.

Additionally, I produced a montage set to music to open our special coverage and live-produced the two-hour special the night of his death.
